LaborAide Recipe: Stay Hydrated in Early Labor With This Tasty Drink

We all know that hydration is important, but many of us are chronically dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water in the lead up to labor is especially important - not only will you feel better, but being well-hydrated can actually make your contractions more effective.

But water is a) not the only factor in hydration - you need electrolytes too, and b) sometimes not appealing. I got the following laboraide recipe from my instructor and mentor Lindsey McCoy of Body Ready Method®, and I prefer it to other recipes floating around online because it also includes baking soda, which some research indicates can also improve the stamina of your uterus during labor. Also, it tastes great!

As a doula, I recommend having some of this on hand to sip in early labor or before an induction - you could even make a batch into ice cubes to crush and chew on!

Lindsey’s Laboraide Recipe

  • 1 quart of water

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1/3 cup honey

  • 1-2 Calcium Carbonate tablets, crushed

  • ¼ tsp baking soda

Enjoy!
